Safe and Welcoming Communities
Waiting Periods
Well over half of all gun deaths in Michigan are suicides. The impulsivity of a suicidal person is almost certain to be fatal if they are able to lay their hands on a gun, while the fatality rate of other methods—like poison or cuts—hardly reaches 10%. Research also demonstrates that waiting periods are an effective way to placate impulsive actors. I support a mandatory waiting period on the purchase of any firearm.
Preventing Guns from Falling Into the Wrong Hands
By and large, gun owners in the state of Michigan are law-abiding and upstanding citizens, and gun shop owners ought to assume that of their licensed customers. However, when friends and family recognize that someone is becoming a threat to themselves and others, I support passing Extreme Risk Protection Orders that would prevent such an individual from acquiring a firearm. Furthermore, domestic abusers and others convicted of misdemeanors should be required to surrender their firearms and ammunition.
Universal Background Checks
The system we have right now is not working. While licensed gun shop owners work diligently to ensure their clientele should be allowed to buy a gun, private sellers and gun show dealers are not required to run a background check for every purchaser through loopholes, but the purchaser must present a license. These licenses are renewed once every five years, so if an individual has committed a crime and the license was not removed, then a criminal may walk into a gun show and purchase an incredibly dangerous firearm. I support enacting universal background checks on all gun purchases because only law-abiding citizens should be able to purchase guns.
Ban on Weapons of War
Hunting is a central part of the culture of many families in Michigan, and they are the ultimate tool for self-defense. However, weapons “that were designed and configured for rapid fire and combat use” ought to be reserved for the battlefield. I support a ban on high-capacity magazines, bump stocks and assault weapons similar to the Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994, which expired in 2004.
Securing Our Schools
Every Michigan family should be able to send their children to school — and every student should be able to attend school — without the fear of being harmed by gun violence. Schools are centers for learning; no guns needed.
